Settled in for the summer!

It sure has taken us a while to get settled down for the summer, but we are here working  in ghost town of Columbine until September 30th!  Here is a brief history of Columbine that you may find interesting!

In 1897 during the Routt County gold rush James R Caron created an 11 acre  township and named it Columbine.  Consisting of a score of rustic cabins, general store, a post office and a saloon, the township became a busy center for local miners and a waystop for the travelers between Hahn’s Peak and the railroad, a distance away.

We are located 30 miles north of Steamboat Springs, it is far enough away from town, that you feel that you are in the middle of nowhere, but close enough to town, that when we want to take the drive it is not far for groceries and other things.  We are at an elevation of 8700 feet, some days we sure can tell, as the lungs are working a little bit extra, we sure hope they will be in shape  next month, as our goal is to climb Hahn’s Peak, with the summit being at 11,000 feet!  We have a view of Hahn’s peak every day, just can’t wait for all the snow to melt so we can actually get up there.  From our camper window on one side is a view of the peak, and on the other side an aspen meadow!

There is a a lot to do this summer, with all the hiking, mountain biking trails  along with  exploring on the motorcycle and in the car with  so many remote roads, we have a feeling time is going to fly by fast!  Hope you all are having a nice summer, and if happen to be out this way, be sure and get a hold of us and stop on by, the drive up from Steamboat to Columbine is a scenic drive that you will sure love!

Just a few photos since we have been here, but sure to check out our Fotki site for many more!

This is the general store we work in, it also use to be a post office, the original post office box’s are still inside. Our campsite sure had a lot of snow when we arrived, it is all melted now.  View of Hahn’s Peak, can’t wait to get up there!
